Ensembles
The UMass Lowell String Project is composed of multiple ensembles, each of which catering to student’s experience and needs at every level.
Ensembles
Allegro - Tuesday and Thursday - 5:30-6:30pm
Allegro is our introductory ensemble where students learn to hold instruments and bows, play scales and songs in an ensemble setting, and the fundamentals of music. Students begin on violin and cello, and for most classes, are separated by instrument.
Vivace - Tuesday and Thursday - 5-6pm
Vivace is the default second year ensemble where students continue to develop fundamental performance skills, knowledge of music, have the opportunity to play viola, and begin to combine into multi-instrumental ensembles. Some students may take Allegro for two years.
Presto - Tuesday and Thursday - 6-7pm
Once students have reached a certain level of proficiency, they move to Presto! Students continue to develop fundamental performance skills, knowledge of music, and begin to perform more advanced repertoire. Some students may repeat other ensembles for a number of reasons.
Lowell Youth Orchestra (LYO) - Tuesday and Thursday - 7-8:30pm
The LYO is the premiere audition ensemble of the UMass Lowell String Project. This ensemble is composed of our most advanced musicians, presents performances in the community, works with guest artists, commissions original compositions and arrangements, and performs full-length masterworks from the last 400 years.
